The Mustard Seed service provides support and companionship to dublin’s homeless

Help Us Feed Dublin’s Homeless

Did you know that the number of people in homeless accommodation in the State has reached another record high and is now at almost 15,000 people.

Many nights, it’s estimated that over a quarter of those people – women, men, adults and children – go to bed hungry?

It shouldn’t have to be that way. In fact, it does not have to be that way. You can help us feed Dublin’s Homeless by volunteering time or donating money. See what you can do.

Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
— John 6:35

Mustard Seed team planning

The Mustard Seed Project (MSP), an outreach service of Trinity Church, provides warm food, clothing and comfort to Dublin’s homeless people. The Mustard Seed Soup Run is a group of volunteers – people just like you – who serve the homeless with gentleness and respect.

You might have seen us. We wear bright red jackets. We work our routes across the Dublin area, meeting both regulars and those who are newly homeless. These human beings are often in desperate need of a hot meal and a mug of something warm, clothing if we have it and, often most importantly, a friendly face and someone to chat to. We also offer to pray with people if they so wish.

Faith 2

Why is Feeding the Homeless so Important?

Serving from the mustard seed van - ‘Faith 2’

It might seem obvious. No one wants someone to go to bed hungry. But it’s even more important than that. Homelessness across Ireland is on the increase (increased year on year by 13.5 per cent). That’s due to a combination of factors: job losses, increased rental rates, more drug and alcohol addiction, increased mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and many more.

Getting these people back into homes isn’t always a matter of handing them a key. Often, it’s also about helping them to regain a sense of purpose, self-respect, and dignity.

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
— Matthew 11:28

Hunger undermines the confidence of those already suffering. Going hungry results in a lack of energy, initiative and concentration. It causes fatigue, irritability, depression and apathy.

Mustard Seed project volunteers work to counter these horrible results with hot food and a comforting ear.
